Payments
Why did I recieve an error when making a credit card payment?
You must be sure that the address and zip code match what your credit card bank has on file. If your card fails due to AVS - Address verification, double check the physical address and the zip code, making sure to match your billing statement with the credit card company. Both must match to pass the fraud protection security settings. This is for your security, as well as AAA Driver Training

Classroom
How long does it take to complete driver education?
The timing depends on a few factors. Class and behind-the-wheel taken together will likely take several months or longer. If you only do behind-the-wheel lessons, you must wait a few weeks between each lesson. The driving package you select and your availability will be significant factors in how quickly you can progress.
Do you offer in-person and online classes?
We offer both. Please continue to our registration page for the in-person class schedule at our Madison West office. Please visit here for our online class.
What happens if I miss a class?
By Wisconsin law, you are not allowed to miss a class unless it is a legitimate emergency (sudden illness, family emergency, etc.). Therefore, you should choose a class that doesn't interfere with sports, after-school activities, vacations, etc.
Do I need a permit to start classroom lessons?
No.
When can I start driver education?
Please see this Wisconsin DMV link for more information.
Behind-the-Wheel
When can I start behind-the-wheel lessons?
Generally, you can start within a few weeks of obtaining your permit. You must practice with your parent/guardian for at least 10 hours before your first lesson.
How do I get my permit?
To obtain your permit, you must register and pay for driving lessons at the school of your choice. The school will issue the MV3001 form to you. You will take this form to the DMV to get the permit. Please visit the Wisconsin DOT website for more information here.
What's the next step after completing drives?
Your instructor will complete all the necessary paperwork and enter your information into the State's electronic system within 24 hours of completing the last drive or observation. You can go to the DMV website and see this information, where you can then choose to waive the road test or schedule a road test. More information can be found here.
What do I need to do to start driving lessons?
You will need the following:
- Provide your classroom completion certificate, which DOT emailed you. Please check your spam/junk folder if you cannot find it in your inbox. If you still cannot find it, please contact the school where you took the class to resolve the issue.
- Complete all necessary paperwork.
- Pay in full.
- Obtain your permit if you do not have it already.
Does the classroom portion have to be completed to start BTW lessons?
No, although most students will start their BTW lessons shortly after class. However, it is possible to begin BTW lessons toward the end of the classroom session. This depends on the teen's ability to pass all required permit tests, obtain their permit, and availability.
Do I need a temporary permit to schedule my BTW lessons?
Yes, you must have your permit to schedule your first lesson. The Wisconsin rule states that your first driving lesson must be done within 60 days of issuing your MV3001 form.
Do I need to bring my permit to driving lessons and observations?
You must bring your permit to every lesson - this is the law. We cannot allow you to drive if you do not have your permit with you. If this occurs, we will cancel the lesson and a late cancellation fee will be charged to your account.
If you are observing, you should still bring your permit. If the driver does not show up, you can drive!
Will I have other students in the car with me?
It depends. There will be times that you are driving with other students in the vehicle observing you, and other times you will not.
Can I request a specific driving instructor?
If that is your preference, you can choose the instructor based on their availability and your availability.
Will I have the same instructor for every lesson?
No, you are able to drive with any of our instructors.
Do you offer home or school pick-up and drop-off?
No. All driving lessons will start and end at the AAA Madison West office. This consistent start and end point allows for efficient scheduling, ensures that all students receive the same driving lessons, and we meet all lesson objectives.
How quickly can I complete my driving lessons?
The timing depends on the package you choose, the instructors' availability, your availability, and how much practice you get with your parents in between each lesson. A teen must have their permit for at least six months, so we recommend stretching out the driving lessons throughout this period or even longer.
Learning to drive is best done over an extended period. Therefore, we strongly discourage completing the driving lesson too quickly and space out lessons a few weeks apart.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule my driving lesson?
You will log in to your account and cancel the lesson. Please note our cancelation policy.
Do you charge a cancelation fee?
Yes, a missed drive will incur a fee. A drive is considered missed if it is canceled or rescheduled with less than 24 hours before the drive time. You must pay this fee before you can schedule your next lesson. There is no charge if you cancel or reschedule with more than 24 hours' notice. If you have a legitimate emergency and must cancel within 24 hours, please contact us in addition to canceling the lesson in your account.
How many drives and observations can I complete in a day?
One hour of driving and two hours observations per day are allowed. We recommend that a student do no more than two hours total in a day though.
